Interesting fact about me
My husband and I met in the Army in Viet Nam, and were also in the Peace Corps with our daughter in the 70s.
My husband Paul and I usually travel together, and have been all over the world--avid walkers, bikers. We live in Brooklyn, in a big apartment in a neighborhood where there are Victorian houses and trees, and even resident parrots--not what most people expect of Brooklyn. I'm a sort-of vegetarian--no milk products, but I do eat fish--but I cook pretty much everything because my husband is a carnivore. I love baking bread. I'm also experienced at cooking gluten-free food, including bread and other baked goods.
Why I Share Meals
A chance to meet new people, introduce them to our piece of Brooklyn--which I think is a stereotyped and/or misunderstood piece of NYC--and our lives. Conversely, I'd love to have a chance to meet people in new places and see their world through their perspectives.
Places I’ve Traveled
Nearly got bounced from a Russian train; biked Viet Nam in 1999; hiked Cinque Terre back from the train; watched the sun rise on the Ganges from a boat; went to one son's wedding in a back yard in The Netherlands and the other's in Paris' 18th arrondissement city hall. Currently putting up blog essays under the heading "Cuba, from the Big Chinese Bus" on http://peacecorpsworldwide.org (I post under "Off the Matrix").
What I Read, Watch, and Listen To
Stage: Book of Mormon, Avenue Q; movies: Ah...so many, it's hard to choose; Bands: I enjoy the Decemberists, folk-style music, Irish fiddle, blues, jazz, Afro-Cuban, old rock, some metal.
A Memory of a Home-Cooked Meal
When we lived in Venezuela in the Peace Corps loooong ago, an Indian couple connected with the local university made us a fabulous meal--this was before you could find Indian restaurants anywhere. The spices and flavors and combinations were all new to me, and I loved getting to know the couple better and listening to them talk about their family in India.
